Dyke across the Basin… c1905; A view of the “Dyke” as seen from the west side of the basin c 1905. The dyke was part of the river mouth jetty project starting on the Plum Island side in 1883 and completed in 1905. Its purpose was to discourage the river from returning to its one time channel thru what is now the basin. The house seen at the end of the dyke was built c1905. The conical lighthouse seen in the background was constructed in 1898. It replaced an octagonal lighthouse which operated from that location for many years. “Sand Schooner” …ready for loading at Plum Island Point. Once loaded with sand, the schooner would head for the Boston area to unload…the sand was used in the brick industry in that area. This picture c1912 was taken not too far from the lighthouse and a shorter distance from what is now the “Captains Fishing parties”. In the background you can make out the steamer pier on the Salisbury shore. The schooners used in this trade were usually at the end of their useful life as fishing vessels or coastal trade vessels. One wheelbarrow full at a time. You had to have a strong back and good balance to load…or you would likely spill the wheelbarrow and start over with another load.. Must have been fun unloading!! Courtesy "Steve Atherton Collection”
